5 Signs Your Temecula Home Needs an Electrical Panel Upgrade

Ignoring these warning signs can cost far more than the upgrade itself.

By Mario Orejel Panel Upgrades

Most Temecula homeowners don't think about their electrical panel until something goes wrong. By then, they may already be dealing with a safety hazard — or a failed home inspection. Here are five signs that your panel is telling you it's time for an upgrade.

1. Breakers Trip Frequently

A breaker trips occasionally when you overload a circuit — that's normal. But if you're resetting breakers weekly, or if a single breaker keeps tripping no matter what you have on it, something is wrong. It could be an overloaded circuit, a failing breaker, or a panel that's simply undersized for your current load. A licensed electrician can tell you which.

2. You Have Federal Pacific Stab-Lok or Zinsco Panels

If your panel says "Federal Pacific" or "Zinsco" on the door, get it replaced — full stop. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok breakers fail to trip during overloads at documented rates of 25–65%. Zinsco breakers can fuse to the bus bar and fail entirely. Both create fire risk. Many insurance carriers in California now refuse to insure homes with these panels or charge significantly higher premiums.

You can identify a Federal Pacific panel by the red stripe on the breaker handles. Zinsco panels are often blue or gray with thin breakers that look slightly unusual. If you're not sure, I'll identify it for free during a quote visit.

3. Lights Flicker When Appliances Run

Flickering in one fixture when something elsewhere in the house turns on points to a circuit or connection issue. But flickering throughout the home when the HVAC kicks on is a sign of an undersized panel struggling with the load demand. As Temecula homes get more appliances, EVs, and high-draw equipment, a 100A panel often becomes the bottleneck.

4. Your Panel Is Full — No More Slots

You want to add an EV charger, a hot tub, or a dedicated circuit for a home office, but your panel has no available breaker slots. Some contractors will double-tap breakers (two wires on one breaker) — this is a code violation and a safety issue. The right answer is a panel upgrade or a properly installed subpanel.

5. Your Home Still Has 100A Service

100A service was the standard for decades. In 2025, with EV chargers, electric heat pumps, induction ranges, and smart home equipment, 100A is simply not enough for most active households. If you have a 100A panel, it's not a matter of if you'll need an upgrade — it's when.

What a Panel Upgrade Costs in Temecula

A 100A to 200A panel upgrade in Temecula typically runs $2,500–$4,500 all-in — including the new panel, SCE coordination, permit, and city inspection. It's a one-day job in most cases, and power is restored the same day.
